Why lucuma is more than just a taste sensation...

Lucuma is a subtropical fruit that is grown mainly in Peru. Its flesh is yellow in colour, similar to a mango and the texture is similar to a hard-boiled egg yolk (not the most appealing comparison, lol). Its delicate nature means that it's difficult to export, so it’s usually dehydrated into a powder - the form in which it is available in the UK.  But don’t feel like you’re missing out… the flesh is known to be dry to taste, so it is usually mixed with other ingredients rather than being eaten on its own.

It can take up to 5 years for the first Lucuma to come to fruition, but once it does each tree can bear up to 500 fruits per season. For this reason, poorer Peruvian communities refer to it as 'the tree of life', for when all other crops failed, Lucuma would often be the sole source of food. Historically, Peruvians consider the fruit to be a symbol of fertility and longevity, and it is often referred to as the 'Gold of the Incas', but why do we today term Lucuma a ‘superfood?’

Here's the low down on its health benefits...

  • High in beta carotene (characterised by its orange/yellow pigmentation), which the body converts to vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an important role in bone growth, reproduction, supporting the immune system, healthy vision and supporting healthy skin.

  • High in Niacin (Vitamin B3) which is generally found in meat, making Lucuma a great  source of Niacin for vegetarians and vegans. Niacin plays an important role in the functioning of the digestive system, skin and nervous system.

  • High in fibre, keeping you fuller for longer and supporting a healthy digestive system.

  • High in potassium which contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system

  • An antioxidant boost - helps to prevent disease and strengthen the immune system

  • Source of iron - reduces fatigue and boosts energy levels

  • Source of zinc – helps to regulate the immune system

  • Natural antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties
